Menengai Oilers flyer Sam Smurf Muregi, 20, and centre Eric Ombasa, 22, are set to make their debut at the World Rugby Sevens Series after being roped in Kenya 7s squad for Cape Town Sevens, to be played on 9-10 December 2017.
The two standout players, who came to the fore after lighting up the 2017 Kenya National Sevens circuit, were called in to replace stalwarts Collins Injera and Dennis Ombachi who suffered hamstring and ankle injuries, respectively, in the ended weekend during the opening Dubai 7s leg.
Though coming up at the series for the first time, Muregi and Ombasa are not new to the Kenya 7s squad, as very recently the two made the cut for Safland 7s, after being picked from an initial provisional list of 42 players, helping the team to the ultimate prize.
Joining the squad alongside Muregi and Ombasa is Oscar Ouma who had initially been named for Dubai 7s as the team's vice captain. Save for the three, the rest of the squad remains as is and will be lead by captain Oscar Ayodi.
Willy Ambaka - who alongside Injera made it to the 2015 Cape Town 7s ´Dream Team´, Frank Wanyama, Eden Agero, Herman Humwa - Series debutant at the just ended Dubai 7s, Nelson Oyoo, Sammy Oliech, Dan Sikuta, Brian Tanga and Jeff Oluoch complete the squad.
Kenya has been banded with host South Africa, Russia and France in pool A at Cape Town Sevens. Kenya will start off against France from 3.27pm on Saturday 9 December then take on Russia before finishing off with the hosts later.
