Homeboyz back rower Steve ‘Security’ Otieno is named among the substitutes in the Kenya Simbas team to play Tunisia in the Africa Gold Cup on Saturday, July 8, 2017 in Nairobi.

Security made his debut in the draw against Uganda even though he played less than three minutes after Joshua Chisanga had gone out briefly to be treated.

Otieno has been rising in the last few years which now sees him play in both Under 20 and senior team, only a few have done that.

When Chisanga moved to Newcastle Falcons in 2016, Homeboyz head coach Paul Murunga made no mistake in trusting Otieno to replace Chisanga at the position. He has filled that position to Murunga’s satisfaction and made the Kenya Cup dream team as he helped Homeboyz reach last four.

Security attended Kakamega High between 2012 and 2014 before moving to Laiser Hill Academy until 2015.

Speaking to Raga House after being named to play against Tunisia, Security said:
“It’s an honor to play in the senior team while still a member of the junior team and all I can do is give my best. I just have to up my game and provide results to Kenya fans and fraternity.”

“It’s my second game and I am hoping to be there for a while. Tunisia is a good side but I think we are better than them. We have to be keen within our forwards.”

Simbas team manager praised Security’s hard work saying: “I want to say a lot of thank you for the young man Steve Otieno who has broken the ranks. He has had a very good Kenya Cup season with Homeboyz and it’s out there for everyone to see. If you’re performing well you’ll, of course, find yourself in the team”.

Joshua Chisanga, in an earlier interview, described Security as one of the players to steer Kenya’s rugby in the near-future.

“He’s a brilliant player, keen to learn, very strong and I think he has a future in this game. I can speak confidently about him because I kinda mentored him a bit in the come up and we still talk every now then on skills that he has learned that I have learned or that I managed in the course of my rugby career and I can say he’s a good player and he deserves a chance to showcase what he can do,” said Chisanga.

Apart from the 15s version of the game, Security is also part of the Homeboyz 7s team as he told Raga House he’s interested in being one of those defending national sevens circuit from September in the star-studded Homeboyz team.
