Kenyan internationals Leonard Mugaisi and Felix Ayange have been named in the Samurai 7s squad for the Algarve 7s set for Saturday June 2, 2018 in Portugal.
Mugaisi and Ayange join seven other nationalities in the team to be coached by Christian Hitt and Peter Richards.
Mugaisi helped his local club Homeboyz win the 2016 national sevens circuit in Kenya while Ayange was part of the Kabras side that won the circuit in 2017. Mugaisi and Ayange have played for Kenya 7s and 15s teams in the HSBC World Sevens Series. Uganda's and Kabras Sugar speedster Philip Wokorach is also named in the team.
They are joined on the team by Aderiti Esteves of Portugal, Stellenbosch duo of Malcolm Kayes and Mike Muller, Portugal 7s captain Pedro Leal, Raif Smith of Hong Kong 7s, Robbie Smith of Worcester Academy and Gloucester's Sam Smith.
Joe Ajuwa is the only player from Nigeria while Ireland U18s' Callum Torpey makes the squad alongside Pieter Schoonraad of University of Cape Town.
For the elite competition teams include New Zealand Metro, Samurai International, Worcester Warriors, Navigators, Germany (national team), Durham University, Portugal (national team), Hong Kong (national team), Russia (national team), Susies Invitational, Catalunya Selection and University of Edinburgh with many players that regularly compete in the HSBC world sevens series confirmed to attend.
Samurai is in pool B alongside Russia, Germany and University of Edinburg as New Zealand Metro is in pool A with Hong Kong, Navigators and Catalunya. Worcester Warriors are in pool C with hosts Portugal, Susies and Durham University.
The Algarve 7s is taking place in eastern Algarve, Europe’s favorite beach resort, in Vila Real de Santo António and its fantastic stadium and high performance center with an impressive stadium infra-structure and two adjacent grass rugby fields.
The elite men’s competition is a stacked, as is the open men’s and women’s competition. There’s also a vets 13-a-side competition for the more mature athlete. In total more than 800 participants directly involved in the competitions.
