Rugby fans in Kenya will have to wait longer before the resumption of competitive rugby after Ministry of Sports approved return to play of low-risk contact sports on Friday.
Low-risk contact sport approved for return includes Football, hockey, basketball, baseball, volleyball etc. Rugby is categorized as a high-risk contact meaning it will remain suspended until further notice due to COVID 19.
A statement sent to the newsroom on Friday afternoon by Sports CS Amina Mohamed said: “all contact sports (low risk) may resume their Premier (Tier 1) league and team Kenya activities. Other activities related to lower-level league remain suspended”.
National teams like Kenya 7s and Kenya Lionesses are however allowed to resume training in preparation of international events although no spectators will be allowed at any sporting event.
“The ministry will continue monitoring compliance to the guidelines and revise them from time to time in the best interest of the health and safety of all our stakeholders”.
Kenya Rugby Union chairman Oduor Gangla on Thursday expressed optimism they will be allowed to resume Kenya Cup by Saturday, January 16, 2021.
