Quins chair: Christie 7s will be the best 7s leg

Sportpesa Quins chairman Mike Lucas says they are looking forward to stage one of the best Christie 7s on Saturday, October 14, 2017, at RFUEA grounds.

Quins will host the penultimate leg of the 2017 National Sevens Circuit with 16 teams set for division one and 24 more in the second division.

“Being the 54th year we need to make big things about it, we don’t have Safari 7s this year so we will try and make it one of the biggest sevens events before the end of the year,” said Lucas.

One team, Mombasa RFC, has however pulled out three days to the event but Lucas says they have since replaced them.

“We’ve got all confirmations done now. Many teams have accepted the invite, but unfortunately, Mombasa have turned down and we have replaced them. We expect a very competitive Christie 7s as we‘ve seen in the circuit.”

Going to Christie 7s, Homeboyz lead with 68 points, Kabras are second with 63, Impala third with 62 while Oilers and Nakuru close the top five with 58 and 56 respectively.

Circuit has been fantastic as we‘ve got a winner from each leg. It shows you how good it is, you are winning this weekend and next weekend you are in the Challenge trophy - that is how competitive it is.”

“Some teams have come out as a big surprise particularly like Menengai Oilers, they are going to be a big side to look out for in Sevens and I hope they will gradually also develop to the main rugby game of 15s now that they are in the Championship because sevens is really not a way to measure the performance of a team, we do it with 15s,” added Lucas.

The hosts will also be looking to go past Cup quarters and improve their position in the standings as they sit eighth with 42 points, 26 adrift of leaders Homeboyz.

On Tuesday, Quins received Ksh 500, 000 worth of sponsorship from Telkom Kenya.
