Monks, TUM off to winning starts in Driftwood Div. 2 action

University sides Catholic Monks and the Technical University of Mombasa began their respective sevens campaigns with big wins as Division Two action of the Driftwood Sevens kicked off at Mombasa Sports Club on Saturday.

Sixteens teams were grouped into pools of four each, majority being Nationwide sides while the Championship plethora is being represented by the aforementioned Monks as well as Ukunda based South Coast Pirates.

Joining Monks and TUM Marines in the list of winners of round one matches includes Comras, Embu, Masinde Muliro University (MMUST) and Nakuru KITI while Northern Suburbs were forced to settle for a draw after MKU Stingers proved a tough nut to crack in the 12-12 stalemate.

Monks went about their business swiflty, posting a big 45-0 win over Spartans as Comras whitewashed Kiambu 19-0. MMUST were close victors over Daystar Falcons, winning 5-0 while a spirited comeback by Embu RFC secured a 17-12 win against South Coast Pirates after conceding two early first half tries.

Nakuru KITI were 31-0 winners over Sailors, who were drafted in as a replacement after Kisumu failed to show up for the tournament while TUM Marines enjoyed a 22-7 win over Stormers.
