Mombasa RFC once again reigned supremacy in the Coastal derby beating South Coast Pirates 21-20 in the fifth round of the 2018/19 Championship season Dec 15, 2018 in Mombasa.
Mombasa and Pirates played to a 13-13 draw at the interval as the hosts scored a converted try and two penalties all coming in the first 21 minutes. Pirates also replied with a converted try and two penalties between the 22nd and 38th minute.
Pirates had a horrible start into the second half losing Joseph Kariuki and Timothy Osija to the bin with Mombasa taking advantage of the numbers to land a three-pointer through Benedict Wesonga.
Mombasa were also on the wrong side with Elias Gitonga and Peter Wanjala getting yellow-cards but Kevin Owuor extended the lead to 21-15 with a penalty.
Pirates' binned players got back to the pitch and the visitors rallied to land a converted through centre Charles Tendwa but by the time Kevin Amiani converted it was too late for a possible comeback.
The four points earned by Mombasa will see them climb to eighth above Egerton who lost to Monks. Pirates stay bottom with two points.
The Championship takes the Christmas break with action set to return on Jan 12 when Mombasa will welcome Kisii and and Pirates host MMUST.
Kisii RFC maintained their winning ways beating MMUST 23-6. They remain fourth since all the top sides won their fixtures.
