Maseno Saints opened their 2018/2019 Nationwide campaign with a 17-0 win against hosts Sheywe at the Bull-Ring in Kakamega.
The Saints ran in three first half tries one of which was converted by Scrumhalf and MOTM Michael Owiye. Bungoma RFC and Citam Kisumu played to a 10-10 draw as Homabay lost 8-32 to Jaramogi.
Maseno were awarded a scrum 5m from the host's try line following a knock on. Sheywe were able to defend the ensuing eighth-man drive but their defenses were caught off-guard following a brilliant display of individual skill by Saints scrumhalf Mike Owiye. A pick from the ensuing ruck and a dummy pass saw him slice through the opposition defenses to dive in for the match opening try.
Maseno's second try was from a lineout which saw Mike Owiye sell another dummy pass to his flyhalf which scrambled the opposition blitz defenses and created a gap in which he dashed into and ofloaded the ball to blindside winger Tony Wambugu who then ran in for the visitor's second try.
After a superb display of ball handling skills by the visitors, Scrumhalf Mike Owiye launched a long range pass to winger Valentine Odongo into space who then was clinical in his finishing to set up Maseno's third try. Michael Owiye drilled the resulting convertion to seal the win.
