Mean Machine survived a late scare from Championship side UoE Trojans winning 27-18 in their opening match of the Varsity League on Saturday Sep 29, 2018 at UoN grounds.
Four tries were enough for Machine who trailed 8-10 at the interval. From the win, they pick four points while UoE's two tries and two penalties were not enough to earn them a point.
For a team to earn a bonus point they are required to win by three clear tries as per tournament rules.
Festus Shiasi and Ben Mwangi had given Machine an early lead in the first half but UoE replied through Edwin Yatch's kicks and Alex Mwangi's try that saw them lead 10-8.
Back to back tries from fullback Trevor Asina with Shiasi converting one was what Machine needed to return to the game
The match looked like it was heading to a draw at full-time after UoE's Tonny Kajala intercepted Alfred Orege's pass inside Machine's 22 but they failed to get conversion which would have taken scores to 20-20 with few minutes to go and probably change the game.
Eighth-man Aaron Orege went over to hand Machine the win.
Machine's next game is against TUK on Saturday October 6 at Catholic University while UoE are up against Catholic Monks.
Catholic and TUK played earlier in the day with the former winning 44-14.
