Kenya Rugby Union has shared three options with its affiliates for consideration as it prepares a return to play as soon as December 2020 -subject to approval by the Ministry of Health.
Tentative fixtures, seen by Raga House, were shared with clubs last week with Saturday being the deadline for submission for any consideration.
Option one is to kick-off the leagues on Saturday, December 5, 2020, with playoffs, take Christmas break between 26 Dec and 9 Jan, then kick-off Kenya Cup on Saturday, January 16, 2021, to April 3. Playoffs will follow from April 17 to May 1- proposed Kenya Cup final day.
KRU regulation 11.1.1 says the club off-season period shall be a minimum of four weeks after the last date of a season and there will be a minimum of eight weeks pre-season before the first date of the National Sevens and a minimum fourteen (14) weeks before the first date of the league's commencement.
Option two is to have the season kick-off with playoffs on Saturday, Jan 9, 2021, followed by Kenya Cup from January 16 to February 13. Teams will then take a two-week break to play Enterprise Pre-quarters then resume Kenya Cup between March 6 and April 3. Nakuru 10s is scheduled for April 10, 2021. Kenya Cup will then resume on April 17 to May 22 and break for Enterprise Cup quarters.
Championship qualifiers and finals are set for June 5, 2021, to June 19 while Enterprise Cup semis and final on June 26 and July 3 in respective.
National sevens circuit is proposed to happen between August 7, 2021, and September 25 followed by Impala Floodies between October 2 and 16 then Safari 7s on 23rd October 2021.
Under option three, Kenya Cup would begin on Saturday, January 30 to April 21, Nakuru 10s and Enterprise Cup pre-quarters on April 17 and 24 respectively, Championship qualifiers between May 1 and 15 then Enterprise Cup quarters, semis and final between May 22 and June 5. National 7s would be played between July 31 and Sep 18 followed by Floodies between Sep 25 and October 9 then Safari 7s on October 23, 2021.
KRU says "the entire Return to Play process will follow the Guidelines from the Ministry of Sports as advised from time to time. The Guidelines clearly stipulate the progression from Step 1 to Step 6. The Kenya Rugby Union will guide clubs on the progression once clearance is received from the Ministry. Our current is RED – Suspended. However, we are hopeful for the speedy progression to the next phases."
