The second edition of Kitui Sevens will be held over the Easter weekend in Kitui county. It will start on Friday, March 30 to Sunday, April 1.
Kitu 7s tournament director Nillis Achayo says day one will be Schools rugby at Ithokwe Showground with senior sevens taking place on Saturday and Sunday.
The tournament was launched last week by Kitui governor Charity Ngilu with the County set to sponsor the tournament.
“This tournament impacts directly on youth empowerment and wealth creation. It also provides a network to the business community in Kitui. Kitui 7s exposes the youth to activities but also create opportunities for the really gifted to fight a rewarding occupation playing not only in Kenya but UK, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand,” said Ngilu during the launch of the tournament.
Cup winner will bag Ksh500,000, silver medalist gets Ksh250,000, bronze medalist takes Ksh100,000 while 4th place and 5th place winner takes home Ksh75,000 and Ksh50,000 respectively.
Raga House can also report that the tournament is sanctioned by the Kenya Rugby Union with Spartans set to be the host.
“Yes Kitui 7s is back and this year we are doing things in a bigger way. We are targeting 16 to 24 teams(Kenya Cup, championship and nationwide) to come here alongside Schools from the region and also outside,” Achayo told RagaHouse.com.
On the sidelines of Kitui 7s there will be a ride show 'Pimp my ride' showcasing cars with winners set to be awarded.
Faru RFC, a mix of players from different teams emerged winners of the inaugural Kitui 7s held in 2014 after seeing off Homeboyz 27-21 in the final.
In 2015. 2016 and 2017 the tournament did not happen.
