Kenya Sevens will depart for USA on Sunday July 15 for the 2018 Sevens World Cup set for July 20-22 in San Francisco without strength and conditioning coach Geoffrey Kimani and assistant coach Will Webster.

Kenya Rugby Union director of rugby Thomas Odundo confirmed departure date for Shujaa to Raga House on Thursday on the sidelines of Kenya Simbas' press conference at RFUEA.

Not considered

12 players will depart for USA alongside three technical bench members -head coach Innocent Simiyu, team manager Eric Ogweno and physiotherapist Lameck Bogonko.

Raga House understands that World Rugby has provision of 15 members per team; 12 players and three officials in this case the Coach, Team manager and Physio. Kimani and Webster are therefore not considered and, unless otherwise, will miss the World Cup show altogether.

"As of now, it's only 12 players and three technical bench members who are assured of traveling but we are working to see Kimani and Webster travel with the team. This should be finalized by Monday or Tuesday next week," said Odundo.

The story is similar to the 2016 Olympics where the assistant coach as well as S & C were initially left behind but eventually traveled.

Kenya 7s is set to play Tonga, a non-core team at the World Sevens Series,  in the pre-round of 16 with the winner set to play Scotland in the round of 16 and South Africa in Cup quarters.

In both, the men’s and women’s tournaments teams will have to win every match in order to be crowned World Cup winners. In the men’s competition, where nations will be competing to get their hands on the famous Melrose Cup, there will be an initial knock-out preliminary round featuring the nations ranked ninth to 24th, while the top eight seeds progress automatically to the round of 16.

All eight quarter finalists from RWC Sevens 2013 in Moscow (New Zealand, England, Fiji, Kenya, South Africa, Wales, Australia and France) qualified automatically for the 2018 edition of the tournament as did host team the USA.
