Driftwood 7s hosts ready for tough pool

Driftwood 7s hosts Mombasa RFC have their heads high as they go into the season opener where they are one of the underdogs.

The newly-promoted Kenya Cup side are in pool C of their home tournament set for Saturday, September 2, 2017.

They will play Kabeberi 7s defending champions Impala Saracens, Kenya Cup champions KCB and Mean Machine.

“It’s a really tricky pool. We will try to give our best against Impala and KCB then of course against Machine we’ll see how it goes,” says Mombasa’s Chris Atingo.

Mombasa RFC had a disappointing sevens campaign in 2016 failing to take part in a number of legs and finished 20th with just a point. Impala finished third while KCB settled for six.

“Our target is to finish in the top three but we’ll try to go for a second. Competition is high across the board as all teams are here to compete and start the season on a high,” added Atingo.

“Preparations to host the Driftwood 7s are going on well. We are doing the final touches and by Saturday everything will be ready to go,” concluded Atingo.

Mombasa RFC met KCB in last year’s leg losing 39-5, went down 40-0 to Homeboyz and 22-5 to Kisii RFC.

Their last meeting with Mean Machine came in the bowl quarters with Machine bagging a 29-5 win. Mombasa went further to lose 7-5 to Daystar Falcons in the shield semis.
