Chisanga barred from facing Kabras four hours to kickoff

Homeboyz RFC were on Saturday Feb 16 forced to field their matchday squad without flanker Joshua Chisanga who was declared ineligible to play for a Kenyan side.

Chisanga was on Thursday evening named in a 23-man Homeboyz squad to head to Kabras for matchday 10 clash but an email later followed few hours to the clash on why he should not play.

Through a letter sent by KRU to Homeboyz RFC, seen by Raga House, the Union regrets Homeboyz's decision to field Joshua Chisanga in a KRU organized event without clearance from KRU.

KRU argues that Chisanga is "registered with Polish Club Orkan Sochaczew since 20.04.2018". Homeboyz on the other side consider Chisanga as their duly registered player.

"Since then all our communication with regards to Chisanga and club have been to the said club, including his release for the Rugby World Cup repechage where we undertook to even pay his airfare home for training and subsequent travel," the Union said.

Chisanga, according to Homeboyz RFC head coach Simon Odongo, was released by the Polish a month ago and has been training in Nairobi. The player is said to have contacted the Polish side to get further details of which he was told he was released early this year.

As per the Homeboyz squad appearing on ScrumIT, Chisanga was named as player number 23 under Player ID 55383.

Raga House understands the club read malice on how the matter was handled. Homeboyz manager received the communication on Saturday at noon, four hours before kick-off meaning they had no chance to replace Chisanga.

Just how did things fold out?

Thursday- Homeboyz name match day 23 for the Kabras Sugar game.
Friday- The named squad, Chisanga included, begin the journey to Kakamega.
Saturday noon- Homeboyz receive email informing them of the decision not to play Chisanga.
Saturday 4pm- Homeboyz kick off the game without Chisanga.

Why the email was sent at noon, four hours before kick-off remains unclear. Odongo said he submitted the 23 names to the scrum-it on Friday and no word came from KRU for the next 24 hours.

Despite the Union saying they contacted the Polish side to get Chisanga for the repechage, Odongo claims the Union wrote to them requesting for Chisanga's release.

Homeboyz lost the game 39-24 to Kabras but a lot has since generated from the said game. Scrum-half Michael 'Tunjams' Wanjala was handed a red-card in an 'unclear circumstances' which the club says they are set to appeal.

Homeboyz are also said to have been 'directed' by an official from the home side to wear Kabras Sugar's away kit for the game since their colours were 'allegedly' clashing. Homeboyz declined.

Even though not part of the appeal to be lodged, Homeboyz are also not happy with William Diffu's yellow-card that saw Homeboyz play 13 players towards the end of the game and concede two tries -one converted and a penalty.

"For clarity, Joshua Chisanga is not cleared by KRU to play in KRU organized events," added KRU.

Homeboyz's next match is yet another big clash against Impala Saracens at Impala Club on Sat Feb 23 from 2pm.
