Ambaka un-contracted for 2018

Kenyan international Willy Ambaka is among 19 Manawatu Turbos players who are off-contract for the 2018 season.

Ambaka lastly played for Turbos in a humiliating 36-31 nosedive at Napier that ended Manawatu's season at least a week early.

In the 2017 season, Ambaka’s Turbos played 10 matches in the Mitre 10 winning only four and losing six. Mitre 10 entered semis last weekend with the final featuring Wellington and Bay of Plenty set for October 27.

The majority of players already signed by Turbos are those who were on multi-year deals heading into the season and include the likes of star lock Jackson Hemopo and All Blacks duo Aaron Smith and Ngani Laumape.

Ambaka has since been included in the Kenya Sevens squad for 2017/2018 HSBC World Sevens Series. It will be impossible for him to play for both Kenya 7s and the New Zealand side just like Kurt Baker whose New Zealand Sevens contract requires him to be based in Mount Maunganui and restricting his provincial availability.

He is, however, a Feilding Old Boys player, a constituent club of Manawatu Turbos. Feilding Old Boys-Oroua is an amalgamation of the Feilding Old Boys and Oroua Rugby Clubs.

Turbos Heiden Bedwell-Curtis and Nehe Milner-Skudder are two of the biggest names missing from the 2018 list.

Other regular starters in the 2017 team not yet contracted are lock Tom Parsons, No 8 Brice Henderson, flanker Nick Crosswell, centre Lewis Marshall and outside backs Newton Tudreu, Ambrose Curtis and Kurt Baker.

The Mitre 10 Cup is a rugby union professional competition for New Zealand unions. It consists of 14 teams, divided equally between the Premiership Division and the Championship Division.

Manawatu is in the Hurricanes catchment area with players to have played for the Super Rugby side being Callum Gibbins, Chris Eves, Nehe Milner-Skudder, Ngani Laumape and Otere Black.

In recent times, Manawatu have also provided players to each of the other New Zealand Super Rugby franchises.
